John Taylor For all the vast distance between Scotland and Australia, there is always a feeling of familiarity of landscape and character between the two. Many painters have travelled across both countries, one of these is Glasgow artist John Taylor, who seems to feel completely at ease in either location. This new exhibition gives us an opportunity to share his interest and enjoy his reactions to the distant landscape around him. Taylor writes about his own paintings:
"On a number of occasions I have visited Australia spending some time in Victoria, at a small town by the coast called Inverloch. It was always the Australian winter when I visited, with skies full of dramatic cloud formations and stunning light effects with big waves rolling onto the beaches. Inverloch is situated on Anderson Inlet, and when there were calm spells of weather - which there often were - it could be very tranquil and peaceful as the morning mist lifted, and the day progressed towards the beautiful light of evening. After a number of visits I made some paintings, a number of which are in the exhibition. This then led to the Scottish landscapes which I feel I should have some affinity to, having stravaigit there for many years. There are various moods and seasons which I hope the viewer will be able to reflect on and connect with. The paintings of sand dunes were a response to a trip to Gran Canaria. I was fascinated by the diverse abstractions created by the light and the rich dark shadows." |
