Mention of the time spent at Hospitalfield House in Arbroath elicits a warm, appreciative smile from the many Scottish artists who spent time there after graduating. Established as a trust in the late 19th century by Patrick Allan Fraser to encourage young artists in their chosen discipline, studio accommodation, space and tutoring were provided to encourage, support and stimulate creative development. It became a summer school for a small number of specially selected post-graduate students from the four Scottish art schools, including many notable and important 20th century Scottish artists such as Joan Eardley, and many other contemporaries for whom a residency served as a formative and creative experience early on in their professional careers.
Hospitalfield continues to be a place of practice and research for established and emerging artists, in all disciplines of the visual arts, from Scotland and around the world. The artists participating in this exhibition are a selection of some of the many who benefited from the special qualities of spending working time with companionship, discussion and debates within the unrivalled atmosphere of Hospitalfield and its studios throughout the 20th century.
Commission from sales will support the Alumni Association funding of the Hospitalfield Annual Residency and Compass Gallery which is a not for profit registered charity.
