The New Generation Show 2008 Every year since compass gallery opened, back in the 1960’s, we have trawled the degree shows across Scotland to find interesting new work for our New Generation Show. Many of today’s prominent artists had their first professional showing in these exhibitions, which often led to their first solo shows. The New Generation Show aims to reflect the ideas coming from this year’s graduates from Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow Schools of Art.
Inevitably, over the years there have been big changes. Among the most notable of these are the huge technological developments in colour printing processes and digital photography. These have brought a new flexibility and interchangeability and have redefined the term ‘mixed media’. Now we can find a whole range of imaginative combinations and effects within a single piece of work, but we still also
find excellent examples of more conventional compositions. It is the combination of these aspects of today’s contemporary art which makes it interesting. It is also a good insight into what is going on in the minds of Scotland’s developing young artists.
