Ronald Rae

Ronald Rae was born in Ayrshire in 1946 and studied at Glasgow School of Art and Edinburgh College of Art. His first solo show with Compass Gallery was in 1980 and he has had several exhibitions with the gallery since then. Rae has extraordinary creative energy which is periodically released by great bursts of activity. He has spent the past forty years carving granite and drawing, painting and writing continuously. Currently, he has a major touring exhibition of 15 granite sculptures showing at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield till 2005.

Ronald Rae's earthy cardboard paintings, dramatic black and white mixed media works and his darker wood pieces, using photo collage, are the result of his travels abroad over the past few years.

All the works have social, political and religious undercurrents. In the Antipodes he was inspired by Aboriginal paintings and Oceanic art, reflected in his use of earth colours and the meticulously wrought rich patterns.

Other works are spontaneously put together with found objects, using primordial themes of birds, fish, insects and organic forms. Some are juxtaposed with figurative images. The more sombre small photo-collage dramas on burnt wood are a challenge to the viewer, a result of Ronald's time in South Africa, his concern for the world, its people and its animals.
