For over 30 years, Compass Gallery has set a precedent
of visiting all the Scottish Degree shows.
It is an opportunity for the gallery’s directors Cyril and
Jill Gerber, to make contact with the young artists, and select
then exhibit the most interesting and exciting works in the New
Generation exhibition.
Thereafter, regular studio visits maintain continuity of interest
and opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the artists’
work. Personal relationships are fostered and close contact is maintained
throughout their developing career.
The directors believe that creating and developing this serious
interest has to begin with the recognition and support of the young
artists early in their career. The New generation show creates vital
public interest, sales and valuable media reviews giving the talented
young artists their first experience of exhibiting professionally.
It provides a first step on the ladder for their careers.
